Ayurveda, an ancient system of medicine, uses myriad herbs with therapeutic properties, passed down through generations. The current project is on Ashwagandha (ASW), shown to be a medicinal herb that has been used in traditional Indian medicine for thousands of years affecting brain functions and other organs positively. ASW is categorized as an adaptogen, help with the body's stress management. Its bioactive compounds, notably withanolides, are steroids demonstrating significant anti-stress effects. These compounds modulate the neuroendocrine system, potentially reducing cortisol levels, the stress hormone. Ashwagandha's neuroprotective attributes are evident in its anti-inflammatory effects, which are instrumental in mitigating neuroinflammation - a factor implicated in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Preliminary studies suggest that ASW can combat such stress, anti-inflammatory attributes that can safeguard against neuroinflammation, and prolonged cell survival under stress conditions that enhances neuronal cellular health. This anti-inflammatory action is crucial in the context of neuroprotection, offering potential therapeutic avenues for these conditions. Bhisé Global Understanding Research/Creative Work Grant.
