Crystals of a new ternary intermetallic compound were grown from reactions of manganese with zinc in a bismuth flux. Mn8Zn1.8Bi7.4 forms as silver needle-like crystals that have a hexagonal (P63/mmc) structure related to the poorly understood polymorphs of the strong ferromagnet MnBi. The structure features disorder involving the replacement of a fraction of bismuth on a specific site with Zn3 triangular units. Mn8Zn1.8Bi7.4 has a hexagonal network of manganese atoms that undergoes ferromagnetic ordering at 185 K. A copper-containing analogue Mn8Cu0.58Bi7.7 can also be synthesized in low yield.
