In the current energy scenario, power quality and transmission network voltage profile maintenance are challenging. The popular FACTS device STATCOM lacks dynamic performance under severe faults and unbalanced nonlinear loads because it is based on a convectional voltage source converter. Recent developments in the M-STATCOM are helping to overcome this issue, but they also call for more sophisticated control mechanisms to address the issue. Considering this, a modular STATCOM is suggested for improving power quality under unbalanced load, mitigating voltage sag, and compensating reactive power. An optimization method known as "Ant Colony Optimization" enhances the performance of the converter. It does this by lowering the percentage of total harmonic distortion (THD) from 24.74% to 4.50%, mitigating voltage sag from 80% to 2.8%. Through MATLAB/SIMULINK software simulation, the performance and effectiveness of the suggested MMC STATCOM under unbalanced load are verified.
