Panarelli et al (p. 266) conducted a 2-year prospective, randomized trial to compare the effectiveness and safety of the MicroShunt with trabeculectomy in patients with uncontrolled primary open-angle glaucoma. Analysis of 395 patients with stand-alone MicroShunt implantation and 132 patients with trabeculectomy found that the rate of surgical success was lower in the MicroShunt group than in the trabeculectomy group (50.6% vs. 64.4%). The IOP reduction was also statistically greater in the trabeculectomy group.
