Research finds that optimizing thermal and structural aspects enhances reliability in pipeline valves, suggesting reduced operational risks.
The design of gate valves for underground pipeline systems involves addressing multiple challenges, particularly in harsh environments where both environmental and operational stresses are significant. The goal of this research is to ensure reliable valve performance, enhance installation safety, and reduce operational risks over the valve’s service life. Two pivotal components of the valve design encompass thermal analysis and structural analysis, both of which are indispensable for enhancing the valve’s efficiency regarding secure installation and enduring functionality. The structural analysis required the optimization of the valve body to ensure that stresses and deflections remain within acceptable limits. Axial forces and bending moments, representing pipeline-induced stresses, were applied to evaluate their impact on the valve’s closure member (gate) and seat seals. Modifications were made to key components to maintain mechanical stability under maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP) and these external loads, ensuring that the valve can withstand harsh operational conditions while maintaining sealing integrity. In parallel, thermal analysis played an equally important role in protecting the soft sealing components during installation. The analysis ensured that the temperature in the seat pockets remained below critical limits during welding and stress-relief operations, preventing damage to the seals. Additionally, proper thermal management facilitated easier handling during installation, ensured proper alignment with the pipeline, and reduced shipping costs by optimizing the end-to-end distance. Preliminary results demonstrate that structural optimizations have successfully mitigated risks from operational and environmental stresses, while thermal management strategies have effectively addressed temperature-related concerns. The optimized design prevents seal damage, maintains reliable sealing performance during operation, and effectively resists external pipeline loads, contributing to the valve’s long-term reliability in remote or unstable environments.
