Experimental analysis examined growth rates of lodgepole and ponderosa pine, highlighting temperature and soil fertility impacts.
Growth of lodgepole ( Pinus contorta Dougl.) and ponderosa pine ( P. ponderosa Laws.) under nine different temperature regimes and four levels of soil fertility was investigated to increase understanding of growth rates of the two species in south-central Oregon. Fertilization increased growth of both species under all temperature regimes studied. Lodgepole pine growth was not as sensitive to night temperature changes of 8° to 16°C as was ponderosa pine growth. The number of daily degree hours necessary for maximum growth increased with increasing soil fertility level for night temperatures of 16°C. Forest Sci. 18:132-134.
