Field assessment compares height-accumulation techniques to established dendrometry in Pseudotsuga menziesii.
The height-accumulation method was tested on a second-growth stand of Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco in Oregon to estimate volume, surface area, and length using a newly developed telescopic Spiegel-Relaskop. Results compared favorably with measurements of the same trees taken with the highly accurate Barr & Stroud optical dendrometer. Computer programs were developed incorporating the height-accumulation method of measuring individual trees with the Bitterlich point sampling method to obtain volumes per acre and per stand.
