Laboratory studies reveal the potential of fly ash solutions for waterproofing process wells, suggesting improved management in uranium mining operations.
Uranium mining using the in-situ leaching (ISL) method involves the following steps: construction, operation and liquidation of process wells. Each stage is a complex process requiring the solution of individual critical tasks related to the selection of materials for the waterproofing of the annular space in order to eliminate the flow of working solutions, as well as the liquidation of decommissioned wells with guaranteed isolation of the productive horizon from possible contact with waters of overlying aquifers. The article presents the results of laboratory studies of various types of solutions created on the basis of fly ash - waste from coal-fired thermal power plants, which allowed the authors of the article to formulate recommendations for their use in the repair and liquidation of uranium ISL wells.
