Content analysis reveals alignment of job postings with BABOK standards, highlighting key skills required in business analysis.
This study examines the alignment between business analyst job advertisements and the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK) Guide V3, a globally recognized professional standard. Through content analysis of 100 unique business analyst job postings collected from major U.S. job platforms over a 12-month period, the research investigates how employer expectations correspond to the knowledge areas and competencies outlined in the BABOK framework. Findings reveal strong alignment with certain BABOK knowledge areas, particularly Elicitation and Collaboration (85%) and Requirements Analysis and Design Definition (75%), while other areas such as Strategy Analysis and Requirements Life Cycle Management appear less frequently. The analysis demonstrates that contemporary business analyst roles emphasize communication skills, analytical capabilities, and stakeholder management, reflecting the profession's evolution beyond traditional IT boundaries into a strategic business function. This research validates the practical relevance of the BABOK Guide while identifying potential gaps between professional standards and labor market demands, offering valuable insights for educators, practitioners, and hiring managers seeking to bridge theory and practice in business analysis.
