Analysis reveals entrants' concerns about maritime safety and labor market effects of MASS implementation.
With the discussion on Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) focusing on their potential technical feasibility, legal feasibility, and financial impact, deliberations are mostly theoretical or based on small samples of elicited experts. Meanwhile, MASS are expected to revolutionize the maritime industry, including the way in which future generations of seafarers would perform their jobs. The herein study investigates how entrants perceive the three aspects of MASS implementation: their impact on maritime safety, labor market, and economical foundations of shipping. The data for this study was gathered during a written examinations, following an introductory course on MASS. The results indicate that safety implications appear to be the most relevant for the entrants, followed by those related to the labor market.
