This review highlights the application of solid lipid nanoparticles in targeted drug delivery for colon cancer treatment.
Colon cancer is the most common type of stomach cancer which begins in the colon or rectum. This can be diagnosed and treated by colonoscopy, chemotherapy, targeted drug delivery, surgery. Longer retention time of colon and drug absorption facilitated by mucosa makes colon an ideal location for drug delivery. However, drug stability in the colon can be affected by colonic contents making it ineffective. This problem can be overcome by using solid lipid nanoparticles as a carrier system. This review aims to highlight some of the key aspects related to colon cancer, treatment strategies and SLNs including their types, methods of production, characterization, selection of excipients as well as several studies highlighting the application of SLNs in the treatment of colon cancer.
