Molecular dynamics simulation reveals electric field decreases shear modulus and alters thermal and dielectric characteristics of epoxy resin.
Basin insulators made of epoxy resin are the key component of HVDC GIS. This study systematically explores how electric field exposure influences the thermal, mechanical, and dielectric characteristics of epoxy polymer matrices at the microscale. At the microscale, experimental data indicate that elevating the electric field intensity lowers the glass transition temperature of the epoxy resin by 105.45 K. While the material's thermal conductivity demonstrated field-dependent enhancement, this upward trend exhibited progressively diminished growth rates. Mechanical characterization indicated substantial property deterioration, manifesting as 22.52%, 18.91%, and 30.94% decrements in Young's modulus, bulk modulus, and shear modulus respectively. Furthermore, dielectric analysis confirmed that higher electric field conditions caused a measurable increase in the polymer's relative permittivity.
