Bayesian analysis improves decision-making and situational awareness in offshore drilling, enhancing blowout risk management.
This paper presents a Bayesian probabilistic approach for dynamically updating blowout probabilities throughout the various phases of a drilling campaign. The proposed method integrates key elements such as well design, drilling rig characteristics, risk factors, and operational conditions. By incorporating this approach into an operational dashboard, the tool supports risk-informed decision-making and improves situational awareness during drilling operations. Additionally, it serves as a valuable resource for refining well design and optimizing planning. The proposed method employs a three-level hierarchical modeling approach. The first level models primary and secondary well barrier envelopes, this layer provides information on the risk of kicks and blowouts. The second level decomposes the well barrier elements into intermediate failure modes and root causes, reflecting specific well design and rig conditions. The third level incorporates Risk Influencing Factors (RIFs) that account for operational conditions affecting system and subsystem reliability. Bayesian Network framework is adopted due to its flexibility in modeling dependencies between quantitative and qualitative variables, making it ideal for capturing the complexity of blowout risk scenarios. The proposed Bayesian probabilistic method addresses key limitations of traditional risk assessment techniques in the oil and gas industry. Tabletop tests demonstrate its ability to dynamically update risk assessments based on new information, accurately model complex interdependencies, and integrate technical and non-technical factors, including human and organizational influences. The operational dashboard transforms complex risk data into actionable insights, such as a real-time ‘blowout gauge’, blowout probability trends, degradation stages of system barriers, and a dynamic list of safety-critical elements ranked by their contribution to blowout prevention. These features provide a practical and reliable tool for engineers to enhance decision-making and risk management during offshore drilling operations. This method stands out due to its integration of Bayesian probabilistic modeling with an intuitive operational dashboard, bridging the gap between complex statistical frameworks and practical application in offshore drilling. Unlike traditional methods, it offers real-time risk updates, accounts for intricate interdependencies, and incorporates human and organizational factors. This novel approach provides a powerful tool to improve safety outcomes and optimize decision-making in high-risk drilling environments.
