Systematic review identifies key challenges in integrating Industry 4.0 in engineering education, suggesting improved alignment with industry needs.
This paper presents a comprehensive systematic review of current approaches, challenges, and best practices in integrating Industry 4.0 technologies into engineering curricula. Through analysis of 178 high-quality studies spanning 2015–2024, we identify implementation patterns across engineering disciplines, propose a technology-pedagogy mapping framework, and quantify the alignment between educational initiatives and industry requirements. Our findings reveal significant disparities in adoption rates across different engineering fields and highlight successful interdisciplinary approaches that can be broadly implemented. This review provides a structured evaluation framework for engineering departments seeking to enhance Industry 4.0 readiness and offers evidence-based recommendations for curriculum development that addresses the critical skills gap between education and industry needs.
