Reduction of diimine forms magnesium, strontium, and barium complexes, suggesting insights into metal coordination chemistry.
The reduction of diimine Ar Mid -bian (L) (Ar Mid -bian = (1-[2,6-dibenzhydryl-4-methylphenyl]-2-[2,6-di-isopropylphenyl]iminoacenaphthene) with excess magnesium, calcium, strontium, or barium in the presence of catalytic amounts of the corresponding iodides results in the formation of complexes [(Ar Mid -bian)Mg(Thf)(Dme)] ( I ), [(Ar Mid -bian)Ca(Dme) 2 ] ( II ), [(Ar Mid -bian)Sr(Dme) 2 ] ( III ), and [(Ar Mid -bian)Ba(Dme) 2 ] ( IV ) containing the Ar Mid -bian dianion. Compounds L , I − IV were characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and X-ray diffraction (CCDC no. 2 440 721 ( L ), 2 440 722 ( I ), 2 440 723 ( II ), 2 440 724 ( III ), 2 440 725 (I V )).
