Qualitative research highlights challenges of chronic kidney disease in young adults, suggesting the need for supportive healthcare systems.
This study investigated the lived experiences, challenges, and coping mechanisms of young adults living with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in the Philippines. Employing a qualitative research design, data were gathered through virtual semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Colaizzi’s method. The findings reveal how CKD profoundly affects participants’ lives, including their physical health, emotional stability, social relationships, financial well-being, and life goals. Despite facing disrupted ambitions, social stigma, and emotional exhaustion, many participants found strength in faith, family support, and personal resilience. Their narratives reflect both the burden and the bravery of navigating a chronic illness during a pivotal life stage. The study emphasizes the need for more responsive and holistic healthcare systems that go beyond clinical treatment to address the emotional and psychosocial dimensions of young adults with CKD. It also advocates for inclusive policies and community-based support that honor their unique struggles and strengths.
