Analysis of sustainable buildings in Turkey and USA reveals differences in LEED certification levels, indicating regional challenges.
Green schools are important not only for the construction processes but also for creating sustainability awareness at an early age. Various assessment systems have emerged to determine how sustainable these buildings are. The aim of the study is to reveal the importance of a green building assessment system that is compatible with the climatic conditions of the region in which it is located and complies with the laws and regulations of the country in which it is implemented. Within the scope of the study, schools with LEED BD+C: Schools v4 certification in the USA and Türkiye were first determined. The category-based success percentages of schools at each of the Platinum and Gold levels were examined, and then a sample school building with Platinum and Gold certificates from Türkiye and the USA was selected and a total of 4 school buildings were compared. There is only one platinum level school and one gold level school in Turkey. For this reason, the schools analyzed in the USA were also selected from schools with similar scores to the schools in Turkey and with the closest square ft. A large difference was observed between the number of schools with the relevant certificate. While the number of schools with the relevant certificate is 90 in the USA, it is only 2 in Türkiye. In addition, the regional priority category is one of the categories with the highest success rates for both countries.
