Population

1 47-year-old female with prior tobacco use presenting with acute pericarditis and subsequent cardiogenic shock due to hemorrhagic cardiac tamponade from a mycotic ascending aortic aneurysm.

Intervention

Emergent replacement of the ascending aorta with drainage of pericardial effusion, followed by targeted antibiotic therapy (cefadroxil).

Outcome

Patient survival and recovery from surgery.

This case highlights a rare presentation of a mycotic ascending aortic aneurysm caused by Staphylococcus capitis that initially masqueraded as idiopathic acute pericarditis.

Abstract

, a rare and slow-growing organism with scarce literature as it pertains to mycotic aortic aneurysms. The patient ultimately recovered from surgery and was discharged on appropriate antibiotics.
