Key Points

  • To present a rare case of primary extra-axial pilocytic astrocytoma at the cerebellopontine angle in a child.
  • Case report of a 10-year-old male with a primary extra-axial pilocytic astrocytoma.
  • Detailed imaging studies to differentiate from other tumors like vestibular schwannoma and meningioma.
  • Surgical intervention strategies to protect surrounding neurovascular structures.
  • Only four cases of primary extra-axial pilocytic astrocytoma reported to date.
  • The tumor radiologically mimicked other common CPA tumors.
  • Surgical strategies were successfully implemented to safeguard neurovascular structures.

Abstract

Glial tumors in the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) are uncommon and comprise less than 1% of CPA tumors. Primary extra-axial pilocytic astrocytoma of the CPA is very rare, with only four cases reported to date. Primary extra-axial pilocytic astrocytoma of CPA radiologically mimic other tumors such as vestibular schwannoma and meningioma. These tumors pose a formidable challenge from a neurosurgical perspective, and different strategies are required to protect surrounding neurovascular structures. Here, we are tempted to report an interesting case of primary extra-axial pilocytic astrocytoma of the cerebellopontine angle in a 10 year-old male child.
