In my six years as an IT professional, I have served as a Systems Administrator specialising primarily in Azure Cloud Migration, particularly with Terraform scripting and creating Virtual Networks. As part of my job description, I also had to troubleshoot numerous Latency Issues stemming from their overall complexity. Eventually, I transitioned into a lead position and quickly realised my struggles were not about the technical part. The real challenge was managing the scope, stakeholders and timeline. To aid in my transition, I sought to obtain my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. This was a significant change for me from being in a binary world where code runs or doesn't run, to being in a grey area of leadership and negotiation that is project management. Because of the challenges I faced with this transition, I want to explain the way I prepared myself, including information about the exam itself and how I was able to pass the exam using the CERTIFICATION EXAM. The Reality of the PMP Exam You should know everything about the PMP Exam before you start studying for it. The difference between the PMP Exam and a simple memory test is that the PMP Exam will evaluate your ability to apply the rules (standards) you have learned to real-life situations. Exam Format and Length of Exam I found the newest PMP Exam Rules on the PMI's website under the Exam Content Outline. According to the Exam Content Outline, the PMP Exam consists of 180 questions and must be completed within 230 minutes. For the candidate, this creates a challenge for two reasons: First, the candidate will be required to answer the questions in a relatively short time frame, specifically just over 1 minute per question on average. Secondly, the candidate will have to deal with 3 types of question formats: Multiple-choice. 3 Areas of Test Questions The questions in the PMP Exam will be divided into three main areas: - People (42%): Leading team members and resolving conflict. - Process (50%): Using a methodology such as predictive, agile or hybrid. - Business Environment (8%): Creating value and facilitating change. Prerequisites and Costs Eligibility RequirementsIn order to register, you have to demonstrate your experience, and I do have a four-year degree, so PMI required me to show that I had 36 months of unique project management experience. If you do not have a four-year degree, then you will have to show that you have 60 months of unique project management experience. Each candidate must also complete a minimum of 35 hours of formal education prior to applying to take the exam. Exam Fees The fees for the exam are significant. The current exam fee is It was less expensive to become a member of PMI first. A membership costs 129 USD plus a 10 membership fee. This decision saved me some on the final exam cost. In addition, with my membership, I received a free PDF copy of the PMBOK Guide and the Agile Practice Guide. Where to Take the Exam Pearson VUE administers the exam, and you can take it either at a physical testing location or via the internet. I chose the online option because my home office provides a quiet environment to take the exam. My Study Method: Where I Started Initially, I considered taking the traditional route by purchasing the PMBOK Guide (7th Edition). While I completed that, I learned it is a reference book for PM, not a study guide. The PMBOK Guides outline what the processes are; however, they do not teach you how to select the right answer when four choices seem to be correct answers. My experience confirmed that I did indeed have a significant gap in my knowledge of Agile methodology. Since I have always worked with an IT Infrastructure background, I was comfortable with the Waterfall method, where all planning occurs before development begins. The current PMP examination is approximately 50% Agile or Hybrid. As a result, I struggled to answer nearly all the practice questions on Agile teams. Therefore, I needed a better resource that would help me understand why certain answers are correct through logical reasoning. Why I Chose the Certification Exam After examining what has been posted about the PMP exam on a variety of sites, including Reddit (particularly r/pmp), I discovered a recurrent theme of candidates who do not pass the exam because, while they understand the terms used to discuss project management, they do not possess the 'PMI Mindset'. For this reason, I have chosen to use the CERTIFICATION EXAM as my primary method for preparing for the exam. My selection is based on three considerations: Situational Focus: I needed to be able to think critically about complex situations rather than simply recall definitions. Detailed Explanations: Knowing why the second-best answer is incorrect is vital to my preparation. Data Tracking: I wanted to determine whether my scores in the People domain were actually getting better. How I Used the Certification Exam to Prepare My plan was not just take random quizzes; I was using the CERTIFICATION EXAM to prepare for simulating actual testing conditions. The Sprints (60 Questions) - In the exam, you'll get two breaks; the breaks are the only way to split up 3 sets of 60 questions. So, I created 3 (sets) of 60 (questions) using a 60-question timed testing option. For example, I would sit for 1 hour and 15 minutes without stopping. Finding My Weaknesses - After each session, I reviewed results from the CERTIFICATION EXAM. Initially, my Agile score was 55%. The software pointed out the problem: I was confusing Servant Leader with Directive Leader. The CERTIFICATION EXAM had definitions to make it clear. In the PMI Certification, a leader works as a facilitator, not a dictator. The difference between these two terms is small but significant to passing the examination. The Process of Crossing-Off - Finally, I practiced crossing-off options I thought were not correct. Most of the time, I only cross off two obviously incorrect answers, and I am left with two options. The CERTIFICATION EXAM has given me practice crossing off incorrect options, which I believe will help me during the exam, as well as allowing me to complete the exam more quickly! Alternatives to CERTIFICATION EXAM: A Comparison I also see other great tools available for PMP preparation, and for thoroughness, I have compared the 3 most significant competitors with CERTIFICATION EXAM as follows: All sources were from the official websites and the offerings they had 1. PMI Study Hall - Official PMI Product Source: PMI's Official Site What they offer: The official product of the organisation responsible for the creation of the exam itself, providing practice questions and complete mocks. Comparison: The PMI Study Hall MT gives the most accurate representation of question style; however, many users have commented that the explanations for answers are not detailed enough to explain why the answer is correct, even when you know it is correct. In contrast to the PMI Study Hall, CERTIFICATION EXAM provided me with very detailed and thorough reasoning for each answer choice, which helped me to learn the logic behind the reasoning much more quickly. 2. The PM PrepCast (Project Management PrepCast) OSPI provides exam preparation materials such as a challenging and deep hyper-learning style simulation program. The cost of the OSPI simulator is approximately 149; however, while the OSPI simulator is a worthy investment, I believe that the CERTIFICATION EXAM offers comparable levels of difficulty, but at a significantly lower price point. I also found that the user interface of the CERTIFICATION EXAM allowed me to create custom quizzes addressing specific areas of wweaknesswith greater ease than did the OSPI simulator. 3. Pocket Prep (Professional Pocket Prep) According to the Pocket Prep official website, the application is designed for use on a mobile device. The phone aspect of the Pocket Prep product allows for compressed-study time over mobile phones. While Pocket Prep works well for studying while taking public transport, I found that mobile app-based questions tended to be much shorter in length while preparing me for questions on the longer PMP exam. With the CERTIFICATION. EXAM software, the Desktop application experience was essentially the same as what I saw on my laptop screen during my actual day of taking the PMP exam through Pearson VUE. Professional Outcomes and Salary Having the PMP Dumps has had a quick and immediate effect on my professional life.
