Investigation evaluates hail suppression outcomes in Texas, suggesting future implications for Illinois.
An investigation was performed to evaluate statistically the results of the first four years of an ongoing hail suppression project in Texas so as to gain information relative to a decision on a future hail suppression effort in Illinois. Continuous hail suppression operations over a 4-year period and in a fixed area offer a good opportunity to assess the effects of cloud base seeding as reflected in surface hail data. Two sets of hail data with long-term historical records in and around the 2-county area in Texas with hail suppression projects in the 1970-73 period were investigated.
