Balloon angioplasty improves pulmonary artery pressure and functional performance in CTEPH.
Why the study?
Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension is a progressive, severe disease, and balloon pulmonary angioplasty serves as a treatment option for patients with distal disease.
Does balloon pulmonary angioplasty improve functional, hemodynamic, and right ventricular function in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension?
Does balloon pulmonary angioplasty improve functional, hemodynamic, and right ventricular function in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension?
Balloon pulmonary angioplasty is a safe and effective intervention for distal chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, though it typically requires multiple sessions to achieve optimal functional and hemodynamic improvements.
May support balloon pulmonary angioplasty in distal chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension; leaves open confirmation in randomized trials.
Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension is a rare but progressive and severe disease which lead to respiratory and heart failure. Patients with proximal thromboembolic disease should be treated with pulmonary endarterectomy and patients with distal disease can be treated with drugs and balloon angioplasty. Balloon pulmonary angioplasty is a safe procedure which often have to be repeated several times in one patient to result with significant functional, hemodynamic and right ventricular function improvement. We summarized indication, technique and the outcome of this procedure in chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension patients.

Obradović et al. (2020) studied Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (n=18). Balloon pulmonary angioplasty vs. Standard treatment with anticoagulants and pulmonary hypertension drugs was evaluated on Improvement in pulmonary artery pressure and functional performance. Balloon angioplasty can significantly improve pulmonary artery pressure and functional performance in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.
