Each "Communication Corner" essay is self-contained; however, they build on each other. For best results, before reading this essay and doing the exercise, go to the first essay "How an Ugly Duckling Became a Swan", then read each succeeding essay. Most people seem to believe that writing a good expository (non-fiction) text takes place in two stages: 1) produce a first draft that contains all the information you want to convey, and 2) polish the first draft to produce the final draft that is grammatically and syntactically correct. However, it's not quite that simple. The final draft (or drafts, it usually takes more than one) must ensure that the information of the first draft is as easy as possible for the reader to understand, assimilate, and retain.
