This research demonstrates improved modeling of reinforced concrete using 3D printed reinforcement cages, indicating promise for engineering applications.
Creating physical models of Reinforced Concrete (RC) structures at a scale on the order of 1:30 presents challenges due to the difficulty and time-consuming nature of constructing and placing small rebars. This study demonstrates that 3D printing can create steel reinforcement as reinforcing cages, even at submillimeter diameters. The research investigates quasi-static cyclic tests on beam-column subassemblies with varying configurations. Numerical model in Opensees were developed to model the RC beam-column joints. The numerical results compare well to the experiments. These 1:30 specimens show promise as a viable physical modelling approach for centrifuge testing. The proposed small-scale physical models are useful to both geotechnical and structural engineers.
