Case report demonstrates vision-saving intervention for carotid cavernous fistula following trauma, indicating early treatment is crucial.
Carotid cavernous fistula (CCF) is an abnormal vascular communication between the carotid arterial system and the cavernous sinus, a venous structure behind the eyes. This report discusses a case of CCF in a young male who presented with axial, pulsatile proptosis and periorbital swelling, along with chemosis of the right eye for 1 month following trauma. The patient was diagnosed with a direct CCF and underwent therapeutic digital subtraction angiography embolization. This case illustrates the vision-saving potential of early intervention and highlights a classic but often missed presentation of traumatic CCF.
