Abstract The Anaikatti corridor in Tamil Nadu is a critical migration route for elephants, but frequent human-elephant conflicts arise due to increasing anthropogenic activities. This study aimed to assess local perceptions of elephant conservation and conflict through a questionnaire survey conducted in the Anaikatti North-Anaikatti South corridor, Coimbatore, between January and May 2023. A total of 196 respondents participated in the survey. The results indicated a significant rise in elephant visits over the past decade. Among respondents, 38 % believed that natural coexistence was the most effective conflict mitigation strategy, while 33.5 % expressed a religious connection with elephants. Fear of elephants was reported by 22 % of participants, and only 5 % remained neutral. The findings highlight the importance of integrating community perspectives into conservation strategies. Strengthening coexistence through awareness programs, conflict mitigation measures, and policy interventions is essential for ensuring both community safety and wildlife conservation.
