This analysis proposes a chelate bond between retinal and opsin, indicating an alternate structure in rhodopsin.
The published evidence for the Schiff's base type of chemical bond between 11‐cis retinal and opsin in the visual pigment rhodopsin has been examined and is inconclusive. An alternate bond involving a chelate‐type bond between opsin and the enolate form of 11‐cis retinal is proposed. This bond also agrees with the experimental evidence.
