Experimental investigation of slit-modified single-turn coil magnetic fields, suggesting geometric design impacts performance.
Single-turn coil (STC) is a destructive pulsed magnet capable of generating ultrahigh magnetic fields exceeding 100 T. We have made the new STC having a slit at the coil-end part (slit-STC) and investigated properties of magnetic fields generated by the slit-STC. The maximum of magnetic field decreases with increasing the width of slit, and the clear influence of the slit appears in the time evolution of magnetic field. These behaviors can be qualitatively explained by the skin effect and by the reduction of current-path area near the coil center. Further experiments and theoretical calculation are required for a complete understanding of the slit effect. This work demonstrates a new experimental approach for modifying the magnetic field in STC through geometric design.
