A novel design demonstrates effective battery reconfiguration in energy storage systems, indicating practical applications.
As the demand for battery energy storage systems continues to increase, the flexibility and reconfigurability of battery systems have become essential factors in improving operation performance and extending the lifespan. Dynamic battery reconfiguration can be controlled during charging and discharging processes, to maximize the usable capacity and power output, enhance the overall safety and reliability, and facilitate the system maintenance. However, current research primarily relies on model-based simulations or simplified circuit experiments. This work proposes a novel design of the reconfigurable battery system (RBS) and implements it by developing a MOSFET driver circuit. The RBS is set up based on a modular circuit architecture, enabling flexible switch to a variety of battery configurations and ensuring compatibility with laboratory settings where it can be thoroughly tested and optimized. A comprehensive description of the RBS’s architecture, key circuit designs, and implementation methods is provided, offering valuable insights into its design and operational principles. Experimental tests were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed circuit design, focusing on key performance metrics such as on-resistance and switching speed. The demonstrated performance across multiple operational modes highlights the approach’s practical applicability to real-world energy storage scenarios.
