Case report reveals rapid normalization of creatinine levels after dexamethasone, suggesting unusual causes of acute kidney injury.
Introduction: Serum creatinine is routinely used to diagnose acute kidney injury (AKI). Artifactually elevated creatinine can lead to a false AKI diagnosis and inappropriate actions. Rapidly fluctuating creatinine concentrations are unusual. We describe a case where a very high serum creatinine normalised within an hour, prompting investigation of possible causes.
