Early post-operative arrhythmias affect 10.5% of pediatric patients undergoing open-heart surgery and are associated with prolonged bypass and cross-clamp times, hypomagnesemia, and increased morbidity.
Tria et al. (2026) conducted a cohort in congenital or acquired heart diseases requiring open-heart surgery (n=2,096). Prolonged cardiopulmonary bypass was evaluated on early post-operative arrhythmias (OR 1.005, 95% CI 1.002-1.009, p=0.002). Prolonged cardiopulmonary bypass (OR 1.005; 95% CI 1.002-1.009) and extended cross-clamp time were independent predictors of early post-operative arrhythmias, which occurred in 10.5% of patients.
