This classification study uncovers the types of kimberlite rocks, indicating their unique mineral compositions.
Classification of kimberlite rocks improved as new provinces were discovered. Diamondiferous magmatites appeared under conditions of high-pressure (kimberlite) facies, whose critical minerals are diamond and pyrope. There are four types of kimberlites distinguished for their main phenocrysts, some varieties of different groundmass composition being recognized in each of them. Besides kimberlites, eruptive and pyroclastic explosion breccias that contain no kimberlite material, and the products of kimberlite resedimentation are not referred to kimberlite rocks.
