Resilience of Nationalism Among Acehnese Youth in the Global Era: A Qualitative Study from Civics Teachers' Perspectives

This study investigates how schools can strengthen the resilience of nationalism among Acehnese youth in the global era, with particular attention to post-conflict social conditions and rapid cultural change. Previous studies on nationalism in the era of globalization have generally emphasized Pancasila values or single-school interventions, but fewer studies have examined how teachers conceptualize and operationalize nationalism resilience in schools across Aceh. The study used a descriptive qualitative design with a multi-site school perspective. Participants were 10 Civics Education (PPKn) teachers from senior high schools in Aceh Province, selected purposively based on teaching role and experience. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and school observations, then analyzed using interactive analysis (data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification). Trustworthiness was strengthened through triangulation of data sources and techniques, iterative coding, and confirmation of key interpretations with informants. The findings indicate three connected strategies for strengthening nationalism resilience: (1) reconstructing the meaning of nationalism so it remains relevant for contemporary youth, (2) strengthening civic literacy as a basis for filtering global influences and responding to social issues, and (3) optimizing civic education through the formation of civic knowledge, civic skills, and civic disposition. These findings show that schools, especially through PPKn teachers, play a strategic role in translating abstract national values into daily educational practice. The article concludes with practical implications for school-based civic literacy programs and teacher innovation in civic learning.
