The involvement of chemical processes in the formation of dangerous atmospheric haze remains underestimated. Based on monitoring data on the gas and aerosol composition of the dense haze over Beijing, estimates of the contributions of regional aerosol transport and chemical reactions to the dry mass of haze particles are reported for the first time. A new mechanism for the heterophase formation of nitrates, which are one of the main ionic components of haze particles, is discussed, and their accumulation rate in haze is estimated. Their calculated absolute values (tens of g/ (m3 hour) ) indicate a critical role of chemical reactions in the formation of atmospheric haze.
