In this document we want to discuss the possibility to observe the barometric effect and to extract an estimate of the barometric coefficient by the use of a simple and inexpensive experimental set-up. To this aim, atmospheric pressure and cosmic muon flux at sea level were continuously monitored for a period of about three months, using a small Geiger counter, together with an atmospheric pressure sensor. An accurate analysis of the data collected led to a value for the barometric coefficient of (0.051±0.015)%/mbar, in accordance with the expected value. This result showed that the study of the barometric effect does not necessarily require sophisticated apparata but can be easily carried out with equipments that even a high school could dispose of. For this reason such kind of measurements could offer to high school students a good opportunity to approach the field of experimental high-energy physics.
