Feijoa sellowiana (O. Berg), known as feijoa, is a South American fruit native to southern Brazil and northeastern Uruguay, with agronomic, nutritional, and industrial potential. Once restricted to its native range, the species is now cultivated in New Zealand, Colombia, and Georgia, where breeding programs and market chains are advancing its domestication. This review summarizes scientific advances regarding the species’ origin, genetic diversity, improvement strategies, cultivation, pest and disease management, and industrial uses. Natural populations and germplasm banks preserve genetic variability, providing opportunities to select genotypes adapted to different environments. The main phytosanitary challenges include anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum theobromicola , and fruit flies ( Anastrepha spp.), both requiring integrated control. Feijoa fruits are rich in fiber, phenolics, vitamins, and aromatic volatiles, adding value to the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. Future perspectives include the application of genomic tools, improved propagation methods, and the inclusion of feijoa in agroecological and bioeconomic systems. Strengthening F. sellowiana as a crop in its center of origin requires collaboration among researchers, policymakers, and producers to conserve diversity and realize its potential.
