This study provides a theoretical analysis of how social systems sustain both stability and change through the differentiation of functional roles in collective operation. Existing research on influence has largely explained group dynamics in terms of observable outputs such as speech, behavior, and performance. While this approach facilitates empirical measurement, it fails to account for recurring phenomena in which collective judgments converge or conflicts are mitigated even in the absence of explicit intervention. To address this limitation, prior work proposed the MOA–IOA–RAO framework, which shifts the analytical focus of influence from post-behavioral outcomes to the operational level of reference points that guide system responses. However, the existence of reference points alone does not sufficiently explain how collective systems are sustained in practice, nor how distinct functions are differentiated and interact within them. This study introduces social functional roles as the primary unit of analysis, moving beyond classifications based on individual traits or personality types. Specifically, it identifies six recurring functional roles within collective operation: Direction Setter, Structure Architect, Operator, Regulator, Legitimizer, and Stabilizer. These roles are not categories of individuals but conceptual positions that emerge repeatedly in the process of collective functioning. The study further demonstrates how the interaction among these six functions generates both stability and adaptability in social systems, and how role misalignment can manifest as conflict, burnout, and social fatigue. By reframing influence as a problem of functional configuration and structural balance within groups, this paper proposes a middle-range theoretical framework that extends beyond individual-centered explanations toward a systemic understanding of collective dynamics. This study reframes influence as a structural property emerging from the configuration and balance of functional roles, rather than as an outcome of individual behavior.
