This essay examines how storytelling enhances outdoor identities in Latinx communities, suggesting broader inclusivity in environmental fields.
Building on research framing environmental identities for Latinx communities, this essay contributes to the literature through personal narratives of members in the organization Latino Outdoors. Using members’ cuentos (stories), this essay provides images of time with family, time in public spaces, and ancestral knowledge rooted in the garden that help reimagine and reframe an outdoor experience for Latinx communities. This impacts both how Latinx communities might see themselves as connected to the outdoors, and how disciplines might react in light of this reframing. Ultimately, storytelling about the outdoors empowers its storytellers while enabling more inclusivity in environmentally related fields.
