Aggressive treatment improves survival in children with acute lymphocytic leukemia, suggesting better outcomes in therapy.
This letter is intended to provide some facts and opinions concerning prognosis of childhood leukemia. Aggressive multiple drug therapy of acute lymphocytic leukemia of childhood originated at this hospital in 1962. Following is a summary of our results. Detailed protocols and data are available on request. Sixteen consecutive, previously untreated patients were entered into the early pilot studies. Thirteen had complete remissions. For those 13, median duration of continuous complete remission was 8 months; of continuous hematological remission, 14 months; and of survival, 20 months.
