ABSTRACT For roughly the last three decades, neuroscience has provided us with very detailed information and facts about what learning actually is and how it can be made easier for everyone. Nevertheless, the majority of teachers in schools and lecturers at universities continue to insist on traditional methods. However, this increasingly leads to major problems: the gap between the knowledge, skills, and competencies that can be achieved and those that are urgently required for professional life is steadily growing. This is due to persistent misconceptions, the biggest of which is probably that application‐oriented problems should be dealt with in courses at universities of applied sciences rather than in science‐oriented university courses. From a didactic point of view, however, it has long been proven that higher skills and competencies can only be achieved through application. In this contribution, a comprehensive learning environment based on constructivist theories is presented, including the overall course design as well as specific material which deals with the fundamentals of mechanics in engineering education in a competence‐oriented manner.
