Conceptual note proposes a new understanding of giftedness, indicating existing frameworks often fail to explain it.
This conceptual note proposes a reframing of giftedness. Rather than defining giftedness as a bundle of explicable traits — such as IQ, learning history, neurodevelopmental characteristics, sensitivity, environmental factors, or effort — the paper argues that giftedness is better understood as an explanatory residual: a concept introduced when major existing frameworks, even when applied in combination, still fail to sufficiently account for a given instance of ability emergence. The note outlines the structural limits of conventional definitions, presents an inductive conceptual framework, and addresses key objections. It is offered as a conceptual proposal, with empirical validation left for future work.
