Demonstrates changes in reaction products from furan with maleimides, suggesting substitution influences adduct formation.
Four N-(methyl or dimethylphenyl)maleimides were prepared and reacted with furan in a Diels-Alder reaction. A higher percentage of exo-adduct was produced as the amount of methyl substitution in an ortho position on the phenyl group of the maleimide was increased.
