Experimental work optimizes active chlorine determination in bleach, highlighting educational integration of chemistry and statistics.
An interesting experimental work, suitable for teaching and learning Analytical Chemistry, mainly in advanced levels courses, has been proposed in the present manuscript. During the developing of this experience, students can apply the theoretical knowledge of Volumetry (volumetric analysis in general and redox volumetry in particular) as well as of Statistics; so that this kind of work can be considered an “integral work” since two disciplines are related. The scope of this work is the optimization of the main variables, typically, amount of potassium iodide (KI) and reaction time for generating Iodine, in the iodometric determination of “active chlorine” in bleach. The use or not of starch as required indicator, is also discussed. Students will be able to select, apply, analyze and evaluate different statistical tools useful for Analytical Chemistry, such as Response Surface for optimizing variables and statistical parameter “Student T” for comparing results.
