Demonstration experiment showcases CO2 sequestration methods using modified silica gel, highlighting potential benefits for industrial chemistry education.
A demonstration experiment on reversible adsorption of CO2 on mesoporous modified silica gel was developed. This experiment visualizes a technology of post-combustion CO2 sequestration from industrial emission gases and its storage. The adsorbents were obtained by grafting of amino-containing molecules on the surface of silica gel. CO2 passed through adsorbent at room temperature for its capture, then desorbed at moderate heating, and stored in the form of insoluble BaCO3 . This demonstration can be included in the course of Industrial Chemistry or Green Chemistry. The students learn about the role of industrial gas emissions in greenhouse effect and the strategies of its reduction.
