Research evaluates improvements in chemistry laboratory teaching methods and their impact on student abilities in China, suggesting effective reform strategies.
After rapid enrollment increases during the past six years, China now has one of the largest postsecondary education systems in the world. The large amount of financial support from the government has permitted great improvement in laboratory teaching conditions in China, which has led to a new era of teaching reform based on the role of chemistry laboratory in the cultivation of comprehensive ability and creativity in undergraduate students. For this newly reformed chemistry teaching system, the laboratory curriculum consists of four different sections: General Chemistry Laboratory, Instrumental Analysis Laboratory, Comprehensive Chemistry Laboratory, and Creative Chemistry Laboratory. General Chemistry Laboratory usually includes basic operations, measurement, and synthesis. The new chemistry teaching laboratory system, which melds together the subdivisions of chemistry in order to emphasize the interactions among its different subdisciplines, has proven to be systematic and effective.
