This commentary highlights the trends and properties of polyvinyl acetate emulsion adhesives in wood and paper industries, indicating areas for improvement.
Polyvinyl acetate(PVAc)emulsion adhesive is a well-established technology and has been widely used for 70 years in Japan. It is used for wood and paper industries such as flush panel, wood lamination, film laminated wood, paper tube and so on. On the other hand, it is unsuitable for adhesion in bonding to non-polar materials. Ethylene vinyl acetate copolymers(EVA) emulsion fits for those cases. This commentary reports on the trend of PVAc elmusion adhesives in the last 20 years, and then basic properties of PVAc emlusion adhesives, especially the effect of degree of hydrolysis of Polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)as protective colloid. Finally, examples of actual uses of PVAc emulsion under field conditions are mentioned. It is important to achieve both usability through all seasons and adhesion performance.
