Comparative analysis reveals trade-offs between IPSec and SSL VPN in security, performance, and scalability.
This paper presents a comprehensive comparative analysis of Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) and SSL/TLS-based Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) across three key dimensions: security, performance, and scalability. The study evaluates encryption mechanisms, authentication models, vulnerability surfaces, throughput efficiency, latency characteristics, and deployment scalability in enterprise and cloud environments. Analytical modeling based on protocol specifications and benchmarking literature demonstrates that IPSec offers superior throughput and lower latency under high-load conditions, while SSL VPN provides enhanced accessibility, granular access control, and cloud-native scalability. The findings highlight protocol trade-offs and provide recommendations for enterprise, remote-access, and hybrid deployments, with consideration for emerging architectures such as Zero Trust and SASE, as well as post-quantum cryptographic migration.
