This analysis explores curing systems’ impact on epoxy resin properties, suggesting optimal selection for applications.
The importance of epoxy resins in the field of adhesion will no longer be arguable. In addition to the variety of structures, the variety of curing systems is also the reason why epoxy resins are widely used. Even though the same epoxy resin is used, the curing rate and physical properties of the cured product are varied greatly by changing the type of curing agent and the curing conditions. In this paper, the basic chemistry of epoxides and the reaction mechanisms for the most popularly employed systems are described, with aiming that a proper understanding of the mechanisms will allow for the proper selection of curing agents and the proper setting of curing conditions. Polyaddition-based curing systems (epoxy-amine, epoxy-DICY, epoxy-phenol, epoxy-thiol) and chain polymerization-based ones(epoxyimidazole, epoxy-cation, epoxy-anhydride)are presented.
