Intracellular recordings measure membrane potentials in olfactory bulb neurons, suggesting insights into neuronal behavior in rabbits.
Intracellular potentials were recorded from the olfactory bulb neurones of the unanesthetized rabbits. 2. The membrane potential of the mitral cell fluctuated spontaneously. When the membrane potential was depolarized to a critical level, spontaneous spikes were generated, 3. In response to lateral olfactory tracts timulation, some units discharged with short and invariable latency. In these units an antidromic spike was sometimes followed by a prolonged hyperpolarization. 4. In a deep layer of the bulb, the spikes were found to occur with a long latency upon a single shock to the lateral olfactory tract. 5. The mitral cells and the other unidentified neurones respo nded to a single shock of the nasal mucosa with a single spike or repetitive ones.
