The CIR was undertaken in May-July 2022 and comprised the archaeological investigation of one area (C31051), measuring 986 sq. m Construction Integrated Recording was undertaken at Chetwode Mill as part of the enabling works for High Speed Two Phase 1. The Site lies within the parish of Chetwode, c. 1.5km south-east of the historic centre of Chetwode . It occupies one parcel of land, covering 986 sq. m. A mill at Chetwode is recorded in the Domesday Book (complied in 1086) with historical records recording activity through the medieval and post-medieval period. The Site lies in an area where the archaeological potential is not well understood due to the limited amount of previous investigation. The CIR revealed archaeology dating to the prehistoric, medieval, post-medieval and modern periods, truncated by 1940s demolition and levelling of the Site. A Mesolithic mace head was recovered from the fill of a post-medieval quarry, located internally to a truncated ring ditch, likely dating to prehistoric period. The artefactual assemblage reveals activity on Site relating to the water mill started in the 13th century, continuing through to the modern period. The earliest structural remains comprise the partial exposed remains of three timber beams, likely forming the corner of a building/ structure, tentatively dating to the 16th-17th century. A series of stone walls replaced the earlier timber structure, utilising the same space and layout, with the final post-medieval phase still extent on Site at the start of the CIR. The mill ceased to function pre 1825 with the Site demolished and levelled in the 1940s.
